Curved Compression Improves Mammogram Experience
UNC Health Wayne has introduced a curved compression system for patients receiving mammograms, offering enhanced comfort and accuracy.
The Hologic SmartCurve™ system has a curved surface that mirrors the shape of a woman’s breasts to reduce pinching and allow better distribution of force over the entire breast during a mammogram.
Two local women share their mammography experiences, with the new system and the expert team at UNC Health Wayne.

“I had no discomfort at all. I’ve never had a lot of discomfort in the past either, except for a burning feeling, when they’re stretching my skin too much. With the Smart Curve system, I didn’t have any of that.
I absolutely recommend the Smart Curve for other women. Everyone talks about the dreaded mammogram, and I’m supportive of anything that takes the dread out of it. It was incredible.”

“The experience was nice. I had no discomfort. The day that I went for my mammogram, I think, was the first day they were using the new paddles. They seemed to be very knowledgeable, and they explained it very well.
Having to stand and get adjusted was not an issue, as it has been in the past. To me, the paddles fit the breast a lot easier and molds to the shape of the breast. It also gets a better image, and they didn’t have to squeeze as hard.
Breast cancer runs in my family, so I’ve been getting mammograms for many years. The associates there at the hospital are very knowledgeable of what they’re doing. They are very comforting and really care about your health. They seem to love their jobs.”
