Concussion Rehabilitation

After a concussion—a traumatic brain injury—get the care you need to help your body and mind start working more normally again. Visit a skilled physical therapist at UNC Health Wayne.

Do I Need Concussion Therapy?

If a doctor gives you a diagnosis of a concussion, physical therapy can help you relieve symptoms such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Vision problems

Concussion symptoms don’t go away on their own. Rehabilitation can make you feel more like yourself.

What to Expect

During your initial, hour-long evaluation, your therapist will review your symptoms and recommend a care plan to retrain your brain and muscles on certain tasks. You may practice:

  • Exercises to improve balance and flexibility
  • Eye-tracking activities
  • Stretches

You’ll also learn how to prevent another brain injury, especially if you play sports.

Results

Depending on your needs, you may benefit from physical therapy sessions up to three times a week. Keep appointments and practice your exercises as often as recommended to achieve the best possible long-term outcome.
