When to Take Classes

Take part in childbirth classes close to your due date—28 to 35 weeks of pregnancy—to keep the information fresh in your mind.

How Much Do Pregnancy & Birth Classes Cost?

UNC Health Wayne offers free childbirth and breastfeeding classes. Rely on our educators to make you feel comfortable and prepared when your big day comes.

Great Expectations Childbirth Education Class

Learn what to expect when you’re pregnant at this class in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Labor and delivery nurses, who also are certified childbirth educators, teach our childbirth classes. We limit our class size to provide time to ask questions and give moms-to-be personalized attention. Both parents or the mother and a support person should attend. Please don’t bring children.

Class Topics

During this five-week class, you’ll review and discuss:

  • Anatomy and body changes during pregnancy
  • Differences between true and false labor
  • Stages of labor
  • Birthing process and medical treatments
  • Techniques for comfort, breathing, and relaxation
  • Medical interventions for pain management
  • Breastfeeding basics
  • Newborn care, such as diaper changing, bathing, and suctioning the mouth and nose
  • Postpartum care

You’ll also take a tour of the hospital maternity unit and meet some of the staff who will care for you and your newborn.

Great Expectations On the Go Childbirth Education Class

Are you too busy for a five-week childbirth class? This one-day (Saturday) session will teach you the information from the five-week class in a faster way.

Breastfeeding Class

If you’d like in-depth information about breastfeeding, attend our specialized class. You’ll get a great foundation before your baby arrives. Our certified lactation consultants at UNC Health Wayne  provide you clear, accurate breastfeeding information. Mothers naturally produce breast milk in the days following childbirth, but you most likely need to learn the proper latching on. If you have questions about breastfeeding and would like to speak with our lactation consultants, please call 919-731-6494.

Support for Breastfeeding Moms

Join the breastfeeding support group led by our professional instructors. You’ll meet moms like you in a relaxed, friendly environment.
