UNC Health Wayne Enhances Preparedness for Special Pathogens Through Advanced Training with Emory University

UNC Health Wayne is proud to announce that Chanda Madar, RN, Director of Infection Control, and Brittney Davis, RN, Infection Control Nurse, have successfully completed a Special Pathogen Preparedness Course hosted by the Serious Communicable Diseases Unit (SCDU) at Emory University. This critical training equips our team with skills and knowledge to address the emergence of high-consequence infectious diseases, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety.

The course was designed for medical and nursing staff, emergency management personnel, education and training leaders, and infection prevention staff. The curriculum emphasizes the readiness to safely identify and isolate patients with suspected or confirmed special pathogens, communicate effectively with appropriate health officials, and provide essential patient care.

"We are committed to the safety and health of our community," said Chanda Madar. "Attending this course enhances our ability to effectively respond to infectious disease threats, ensuring that we are well-prepared for any future outbreaks similar to COVID-19."

"Participating in this training highlights our proactive approach to infection control and our dedication to protecting both our patients and staff," added Brittney Davis. "The information learned was brought back and shared with key stakeholders.  Working with these stakeholders, a plan has been put in place to safely care for patients presenting with a suspected or confirmed special pathogen."

As the world continues to face the challenges of infectious diseases, UNC Health Wayne is committed to leading in preparedness and response. The information gained from this course, provided by Emory University, positions us at the forefront of healthcare readiness, ensuring we are equipped to handle any potential outbreaks with confidence and competence.
