UNC Health Wayne Donates Wheelchairs and Scale to Support Eastern Wayne High School’s CNA Training Program

UNC Health Wayne recently donated two wheelchairs and a scale to Eastern Wayne High School’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training site. This contribution will benefit students enrolled in the school’s Health Sciences program, which offers a pathway to a rewarding career in healthcare.

The CNA training program is part of Eastern Wayne High’s robust Health Sciences curriculum, which allows students to gain valuable hands-on experience in patient care. Students who successfully complete Health Science I and II courses are eligible to apply for the Nurse Aide I Course as early as their junior year. This opportunity is made possible through a partnership with Wayne Community College’s Career and College Promise (CCP) program. As part of the collaboration, Wayne Community College instructors teach the CNA course on the high school campus for half a day, providing students with an accessible way to pursue professional healthcare training while still in school.

By donating much-needed equipment, UNC Health Wayne is helping enhance the quality of this hands-on learning experience. The donated items will enable students to practice essential CNA skills, such as safely transporting patients and measuring vital signs, preparing them for real-world scenarios in healthcare settings.

UNC Health Wayne is committed to supporting local education initiatives and strengthening the healthcare workforce in Wayne County. “We’re proud to play a role in helping the next generation of healthcare professionals get their start,” said UNC Health Wayne President and CEO, Jessie L.Tucker, III “These students are our future nurses and caregivers, and we want to ensure they have the tools they need to succeed.”

This partnership between Eastern Wayne High School, Wayne Community College, and UNC Health Wayne is not only equipping students with the skills they need but also addressing the growing demand for healthcare workers in the community. With more students gaining certification as CNAs, the program is helping to fill critical roles in hospitals, nursing homes, and other care facilities.

Eastern Wayne High School’s Health Sciences program continues to open doors for students interested in pursuing healthcare careers, and the support from UNC Health Wayne has made an invaluable impact on the program’s success.
