Strengthening Global Partnerships in Antimicrobial Stewardship

Recently, the Pharmacy Department at UNC Health Wayne had the privilege of hosting a delegation of Infectious Disease (ID) Physicians from South Korea. This visit was part of an initiative to enhance collaboration in antimicrobial stewardship efforts, a critical area of focus in combating antibiotic resistance and improving patient outcomes.

The delegation's visit coincided with their engagement with our antimicrobial stewardship partners at DASON (Duke Antimicrobial Stewardship Outreach Network). This network is renowned for its innovative strategies and practices that promote the responsible use of antibiotics in healthcare settings. The collaboration with DASON provides an invaluable opportunity for our local pharmacy team to share insights and learn from international best practices in infectious disease management.

During their time at UNC Health Wayne, our international guests participated in discussions centered on current challenges and advancements in antimicrobial stewardship. These discussions included topics such as the importance of antibiotic prescribing guidelines, the role of pharmacists in managing infectious diseases, and the need for ongoing education and training for healthcare professionals.

Additionally, the visit included a tour of the Pharmacy Department, where our team showcased the systems and protocols in place to monitor and optimize antibiotic use. The South Korean delegation expressed great interest in our approaches to tracking antimicrobial resistance patterns and implementing evidence-based strategies for antibiotic prescribing.

This exchange of knowledge and expertise is vital, as antibiotic resistance remains a significant global health threat. By fostering relationships with international partners, UNC Health Wayne and its Pharmacy Department are committed to enhancing the effectiveness of antimicrobial stewardship programs both locally and globally.

As UNC Health Wayne continues to advance its commitment to patient-centered care and quality health services, initiatives like this international collaboration illustrate the hospital's dedication to not only local healthcare but also the global fight against infectious diseases.
